Apartments can become sweltering in summer. Why heat bylaws could be coming to a city near you
Reported byCBC Canada ↗·Sourced by Goodlede
New Westminster, B.C. became Canada's first council to enact a maximum heat bylaw in June 2026, requiring rental units to maintain safe indoor temperatures of 26°C or lower between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m., following a 2021 heat dome that killed 619 people in the province.
The bylaw sets a standard but implementation and landlord compliance will determine real-world impact on heat-related deaths.
