Ancient Arctic carbon is pouring into the sea, but the seabed captures most of it

Research from the Alfred Wegener Institute analyzing sediment cores off Herschel Island, Canada, found that when thawing Arctic permafrost releases ancient carbon into the ocean, most of it (about 90 percent) is buried in the seafloor rather than converted to greenhouse gases by microbes—a more reassuring outcome than previously feared for climate-warming risks.
