A drug already used for osteoporosis blocked spinal damage in a new study

Researchers using zebrafish found that a bisphosphonate medication already approved for osteoporosis prevented mineral buildup and spinal fusion in models of intervertebral disc degeneration, a condition affecting millions with limited treatment options beyond surgery.

The findings are from zebrafish models; clinical translation in humans will require further research and testing.
